REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA 1912-1914:
Albania became a republic in 1912 when the independence from Turkey had been proclaimed. The Presidency was not introduced, however, until 1925.



1914: REPUBLIC ABOLISHED AND MONARCHY INTRODUCED
The Principality of Albania existed in 1914 for six months only, followed by the period of foreign occupation in the First World War and political instability until 1925. Nominally Albania was a monarchy until 1925.



REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA 1925-1928:
Albania became a republic in 1925 when after a period of political instability the monarchy had been abolished


President Ahmet Zogu

1925-1928: AHMET ZOGU
Born in 1895 in Burgajet as Ahmet Zogolli to Xhemal Pasha Zogu and Sadije Toptani.
He was elected President in 1925, proclaimed King in 1928.
Died in 1961 in Paris-Suresnes.
Buried at Thiais Cemetery in Paris-Thiais.


1928: REPUBLIC ABOLISHED AND MONARCHY RESTORED (UNTIL 1946)



SOCIALIST PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA 1946-1991:
Albania had been a communist dictatorship from 1946 to 1991 and the presidency was not restored until 1991.

1991-1992: RAMIZ ALIA
Born in 1925 in Shkodër.
Elected President in 1991.

1992-1997: SALI BERISHA
Born in 1944 in Tropojë.
Elected President in 1922.

1997-2002: REXHEP MEIDANI
Born in 1944 in Tirana.
Elected President in 1997.

2002-2007: ALFRED MOISIU
Born in 1929 in Shkodër.
Elected President in 2002.

FROM 2007: BAMIR TOPI
Born in 1957 in Tirana.
Elected President in 2007.
