Died in 1937 in Schloss Wolfsgarten.
Buried with his second consort Grand Duchess Eleanor of Solms in the cemetery near New Mausoleum, Rosenhöhe Park, Darmstadt.
His first consort, Grand Duchess Victoria, had been buried firstly in the Ducal Crypt at Coburg. In 1995 she was reburied in St Peter and St Paul's Cathedral at St Petersburg, Russia.
