This church was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and the partially reconstructed tomb of Queen Maria Anna is kept in the Igreja do Carmo, now the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo, Lisbon at Largo do Carmo. The buildings of the former Monastery of St John Nepomucene are now occupied by St Catherine's College.

Born in 1604 in Vila Viçosa.

Father: 7th Duke of Braganza Teodósio. Mother: D. Ana de Velasco.

Married in 1633 in Elvas Duchess LOUISA (Luisa) de Guzmán of Medina-Sidónia (*1613 San Lucar de Barrameda, Spain,+1666 Lisbon).

He was crowned twice in 1640: in Lisbon Cathedral and in the Royal Palace of Lisbon.

His issue who reigned:

-Catherine (*1638,+1705; Queen of England and Scotland),

-ALFONSO VI (*1643,+1683),

-PETER II (*1648,+1706).

Died in 1656 in Lisbon.

Buried together with his Queen Louise in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

 

 

1656-1683: ALFONSO VI (D. Afonso VI, o Vitorioso)

Born in 1643 in Lisbon.

Father: King John IV of Portugal. Mother: Queen Louisa de Gusmão (de Guzmán).

Married in 1666 Princess MARIA FRANCISCA of Savoy-Nemours (*1646 Paris,+1683 Lisbon). Marriage was annulled in 1668.

He was never crowned.

Died in 1683 in Sintra near Lisbon.

Buried firstly in Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon-Belém. His remains were later translated and buried together with those of his Queen Maria Francisca in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

Until 1912 Queen Maria Francisca was buried in the Church of the Franciscan Nuns in Lisbon.

 

 

1683-1706: PETER II (D. Pedro II o Pacifico)

Born in 1648 in Lisbon.

Father: King John IV of Portugal. Mother: Queen Louisa de Gusmão (de Guzmán).

Married firstly in 1668 MARIA FRANCISCA of Savoy-Nemours, Queen of Portugal (*1646 Paris,+1683 Lisbon).

Married secondly in 1687 Princess MARIA SOPHIA of Bavaria-Neuburg (*1666 Juliers,+1699 Lisbon).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned: JOHN V (*1689,+1750; son of Maria Sophia).

Died in 1706 in Lisbon.

Buried together with his both queens in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

 

 

1706-1750: JOHN V (D. João V o Magnanimo)

Born in 1689 in Lisbon.

Father: King Peter II of Portugal. Mother: Queen Maria Sophia of Bavaria-Neuburg.

Married in 1708 in Lisbon Archduchess MARIA ANNA of Austria (*1683 Linz,+1754 Belém near Lisbon).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned:

-Maria Barbara (*1711,+1758; Queen of Spain),

-JOSEPH I (*1714,+1777),

-PETER III (*1717,+1786).

Died in 1750 in Lisbon.

Buried in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

His Queen Maria Anna was buried in the Church of St John Nepomucene (Carmelite Convent) in Lisbon (demolished).

Born in 1714 in Lisbon.

Father: King John V of Portugal. Mother: Queen Maria Anna of Austria.

Married in 1729 in Elvas Princess MARIANA VICTORIA of Spain (*1718 Madrid,+1781 Lisbon).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned:

-MARY I (*1734,+1816).

Died in 1777 in Ajuda.

Buried with his Queen Mariana Victoria in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

Married in 1760 in Ajuda near Lisbon Princess MARIA of Portugal, later Queen Mary I (*1734 Lisbon,+1816 Rio de Janeiro).

Died in 1786 in Lisbon.

Buried in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

 

 

1777-1816: MARY I THE PIOUS (D. Maria I o Piedosa; Queen of Brazil)

Born in 1734 in Lisbon.

Father: King Joseph I of Portugal. Mother: Queen Mariana Victoria of Spain.

Married in 1760 in Ajuda Prince PETER of Portugal, later King Peter III of Portugal (*1717 Lisbon,+1786 Lisbon).

She was never crowned.

Her issue who reigned: JOHN VI (*1767,+1826).

Exiled in Brazil from 1807 following the French occupation of Portugal.

Died in 1816 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Buried in the Basilica de Estrela in Lisbon.

 

 

1816-1826: JOHN VI (D. Joao VI o Clemente; King of Brazil)

Born in 1767 in Lisbon.

Father: King Peter III of Portugal. Mother: Queen Maria I.

Married in 1785 in Lisbon Princess CHARLOTTE (Carlota Joaquina) of Spain (*1775 Aranjuez,+1830 Queluz).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned:

-Maria Isabel (*1797,+1818; Queen of Spain),

-PETER IV (*1798,+1834),

-MICHAEL I (*1802,+1866).

Died in 1826 in Lisbon.

Buried with his Queen Charlotte in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

 

 

1826: PETER IV (D. Pedro IV, o Rei Soldado; Emperor of Brazil)

Born in 1798 in Queluz.

Father: King John VI of Portugal. Mother: Queen Charlotte of Spain.

Married firstly in 1817 in Rio de Janeiro Archduchess MARIA LEOPOLDINA of Austria (*1797 Vienna,+1826 Rio de Janeiro).

Married secondly in 1829 in Rio de Janeiro Amelia de Beauharnais (*1812 Milan,+1873 Lisbon).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned:

-MARY II (*1819,+1853; daughter of Maria Leopoldina),

-Peter II (*1825,+1891; Emperor of Brazil).

Abdicated in 1826 in favour of his daughter Maria (Mary II) and left for Brazil where he became Emperor Peter I.

Died in 1834 in Queluz near Lisbon.

Buried firstly in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

In 1972 his remains were translated to the Imperial Chapel in São Paulo-Ipiranga, Brazil where he was buried together with his first consort Queen Maria Leopoldina.

 

 

1826-1828 and 1834-1853: MARY II (D. Maria II o Educatora)

Born in 1819 in Rio de Janeiro.

Father: King Peter IV of Portugal. Mother: Queen Maria Leopoldina of Austria.

Married firstly in 1835 in Lisbon Duke AUGUSTUS of Leuchtenberg (*1810 Milan,+1835 Lisbon).

Married secondly in 1836 in Lisbon Prince FERDINAND of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (*1816 Coburg, +1885 Lisbon;

later King Ferdinand II of Portugal).

She was never crowned.

Her issue who reigned:

-PETER V (*1837,+1861; son of Ferdinand),

-LOUIS I (*1838,+1889; son of Ferdinand).

Deposed in 1828. Restored in 1834.

Died in 1853 in Lisbon.

Buried with his both consorts in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

 

 

1828-1834: MICHAEL I (D. Miguel I o Rei Absoluto)

Born in 1802 in Queluz.

Father: King John VI of Portugal. Mother: Queen Charlotte of Spain.

Married in 1851 in Kleinheubach, Germany Princess Adelaide of Loewenstein (*1831 Kleinheubach,+1909 Apley, Isle of Wight, England).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned: Maria Anna (*1861,+1942; Grand Duchess of Luxembourg).

Deposed in 1834 and exiled in Germany.

Died in 1866 in Brönnbach, Carlsruhe (Germany).

Buried firstly at Franciscan convent at Engelberg.

Later his remains were translated to the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

Born in 1838 in Lisbon.

Father: King Ferdinand II of Portugal. Mother: Queen Mary II of Portugal.

Married in 1862 in Lisbon Princess MARIA PIA of Savoy (*1847 Turin,+1911 Stupinigi near Turin).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned: CHARLES I (*1863,+1908).

Died in 1889 in Cascais.

Buried in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

His Queen Maria Pia was buried in the Basilica of Superga in Turin.

Born in 1863 in Lisbon.

Father: King Louis I of Portugal. Mother: Queen Maria Pia of Savoy.

Married in 1886 in Lisbon Princess AMELIA of Orléans (*1864 Twickenham,+1951 Versailles).

He was never crowned.

His issue who reigned: EMMANUEL II (*1889,+1932).

Assassinated in 1908 in Lisbon.

Buried with his Queen Amelia in the Church of São Vicente in Lisbon.

Born in 1889 in Lisbon-Belém.

Father: King Charles I of Portugal. Mother: Queen Amelia of Orléans.

Married in 1913 in Sigmaringen, Germany Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (*1890 Potsdam,

He was never crowned.

Deposed in 1910 by revolution and exiled in Great Britain.

Died in 1932 in Twickenham, Great Britain.

PORTUGUESE REGALIA

The most important items of the Portuguese regalia are kept at the former Royal Palace of Ajuda in Lisbon and include:

 

The Royal Crown: made in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1817 by António Gomes da Silva and Ignacio Luiz da Costa. Gold, silver, iron. Weight 2402 g, size 300x382 mm. Composed of eight closed arches surmounted by a ball with a cross. Lined with crimson velvet.

 

The Sceptre: made in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1817. Gold, weight 648 g, size 843x53 mm. It is tipped by an open-work armillary sphere surmounted by a cross of Christ.

 

The Sceptre of Maria II: made in London in 1828 by William Clutton and David Cox. Gold, weight 739 g, size 655x48 mm. The sceptre is surmounted by a royal crown resting on a book of the Constitutional Charter supported by a dragon and Portugal’s coat of arms.

 

The Royal Sceptre in the shape of a lily with four stamens made in London in 1837 by George Dugard. Gold, enamel. Size 868x49 mm.

 

Silver sceptre, 19th century. Weight 212 g, size 430x78 mm.

 

Two royal mantles from 19th century, made in Portugal.

 

The ancient coronation crown of the Portuguese kings was offered by King John IV, following his coronation in 1640, to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Vila Viçosa (Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa) in gratitude for her divine protection during the Restoration of 1640. It was never used by Portuguese monarchs since then.
